PASTORS - THERE IS HELP
AND IT IS FREE IF YOU ASK

Men praying at a Promise Keepers RallyAll of the statistics show that the way to get families in a church and keep them there is to get the men committed. Yet as pastors you are all aware that this is one of your most difficult projects. You can get the women there, but what about the men? Then, there is the problem of time and resources. If that isn’t enough, we have the challenge of finding the right program and structure to keep these clueless guys interested. Are you ready to give up yet?

There is an organization in this area, Greater Dayton Task Force Supporting Promise Keepers (GDPK), that is there to stand behind you and lend you support and assistance.

Most of you are probably familiar with Promise Keepers, but may not be aware of the Task Force. GDPK is a group of men whose mission is to help foster and encourage men’s ministry in the Miami Valley area. While we are loosely affiliated with Promise Keepers we are not tied exclusively to their materials and programs (though we feel that their principles and the bulk of their materials are excellent). We have looked at and used much additional material. We have assisted churches in bringing to Dayton programs such as Ken Canfield’s, National Center for Fathering, Dads of Destiny, Seven Secrets of Effective Fathers, and Patrick Morley’s Man in the Mirror.

The Task Force is made up of men of various denominations, from main line to charismatic to independent. The ministries of these men are across a wide variety of callings. One of the members is active regionally in the United Methodist organization in organizing men’s ministry. Another one is active with the Dayton Dialogue on Race Relations, another with Christian businessmen’s organizations and so on. All of these men are lay people and active in men’s ministry in their local churches, most currently or in the past in leadership positions.

So, as a pastor, you ask, “how does all of this help me”? First of all let me say we are not there to supplant or replace your ministry, we are there to support it.

As an example if you were to call us and say, "can you come over and organize and run a men’s group for us” the answer would be no. If, however, you asked us to help some men in your church get one started, give them suggestions and most of all provide encouragement our answer would be yes. We are a behind the scenes ministry that truly exists to "equip the saints”. We, ideally, work best when we are anonymous. The men’s ministry in your church should reflect your church and your teachings. We are only there to assist you in getting it started and providing resources and encouragement ongoing. So we don’t supplant you and we want to see your church thrive, just as you do. I think we probably all know that the most effective way to thrive as a church is through a vibrant group of men.
