This safe passage leaflet is an example of several types of propaganda leaflets dropped on Communist forces offering shelter, food, and good treatment if they surrendered to U.S. or South Vietnamese forces. They were a major part of the "Chieu Hoi", or "Open Arms" program meant to encourage the Viet Cong to defect.

One of the medals awarded by the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (Viet Cong) was the "Soldier of Liberation" medal, awarded for combat participation in South Vietnam. |

"Resolution for Victory Decoration" awarded to individuals separated from their families while participating in the resistance and liberation of the south. It was widely awarded for participating in the spring 1975 General Offensive. |

North Vietnamese Army Order of the Soldier of Glory Medal, 1st Class, established September 16, 1961. It was given to People's Army of Vietnam personnel for long periods of meritorious service after July 20, 1954. |

Ironically, this WWII dated M1 helmet liner was painted with anti-war slogans and worn during anti-war protests. In addition to the peace sign, the left side of the helmet has "Go Civilian!" written on it; the right side has "Get out now!".

(Left) The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal was awarded to personnel who served in the Vietnam for six months during the period of 1 March 1961 and 28 March 1973, or served outside the geographical limits of the Republic of Vietnam and contributed direct combat support to the Republic of Vietnam and Armed Forces for six months. (Right) The Vietnam Service Medal was awarded to all members of the Armed Forces of the United States serving in Vietnam from 3 July 1965 through 28 March 1973. Personnel in Thailand, Laos, or Cambodia during the same period and serving in direct support of operations in Vietnam were also eligible for this award. |
