North Vietnamese Army (NVA) flag sent home as a war trophy. This pattern flag made it's first appearance in September 1945 when Ho Chi Minh proclaimed Vietnamese independence from France, although the arms of the star were curved. The flag changed in 1955 when the arms were given straight edges. The red field symbolizes communism, while the five points on the star symbolise farmers, workers, intellectuals, youth, and soldiers. |

North Vietnamese Army plastic canteen with padded cover. The NVA and Viet Cong originally used Japanese equipment left in Vietnam at the end of WWII, or produced equipment patterned on it. As increasing amounts of American field gear fell into their hands, they began producing equipment that could be used with the US style web gear.
