This well worn map of the area around Lai Khe, Vietnam is one of several maps kept by Colonel Don Shuffstall when he left the country in July 1969. Among the notable features is the Michellin Plantation shown in the upper left, as well as the annotation for the Headquarters, 1st Batttalion, 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division (the "Big Red One"), shown in the inset. Colonel Shuffstall noted that he was wounded by a mortar round that landed a mere 10 feet from him during a March, 1969 attack on his Battalion. A veteran of the 28th Infantry Division in WWII, the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea, and the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam, Colonel Shuffstall retired in 1979, and is the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge with two stars. Shown here is Colonel Shuffstall's uniform, worn after his promotion to full Colonel. On the right shoulder is the insignia of the 1st Infantry Division, with all other insignia embroidered directly onto the shirt. An ascot made from parachute silk is worn at the throat. National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) flag; the design dates back to 1954. The upper section in red stands for blood spilled by the people in their alleged fight for peace, represented by blue in the lower half of the flag. The yellow star represents the Mongoloid race, with each point representing a separate class - (from the top point clockwise) students, farmers, industrialists, merchants and soldiers.
