SSgt Wise's dress blues uniform, worn by Marines since 1912. The dress blues are the only uniforms made up of all the same colors of our nation's flag (blue represents bravery, red represents sacrifice and white represents honor). The visor hat came with three different covers, which were changed according to the formality of the occasion, including an olive drab cover for wear with the green uniform. On the left breast are Sgt Wise' s awards as a Marine sharpshooter and an expert with the bayonet and automatic rifle. (Donated by Susan Wise-Cunningham).

SSgt Wise is shown wearing the exact uniform above as a Private in this photo taken in 1943.(Donated by Susan Wise-Cunningham).

Private Wise is shown performing bayonet drill during basic training at Parris Island in 1943. He is wearing the same pattern pith helmet issued to each branch of the service, which proved to be both uncomfortable and unpopular. (Donated by Susan Wise-Cunningham).

SSgt Wise took this photograph of several of his friends holding a signed, but very tattered, Japanese "meatball" flag in the jungle on Saipan.(Donated by Susan Wise-Cunningham).

Another of SSgt Wise's photographs from Saipan show a group of Marines holding yet another signed and war weary Japanese flag, universally popular as a war souvenir.(Donated by Susan Wise-Cunningham).

This photograph of SSgt Wise was taken on the outskirts of Nagasaki, where the 2nd Marine Division performed occupation duties.(Donated by Susan Wise-Cunningham).
