Pre-war photograph of a young Japanese Imperial Army private wearing a model 1930 uniform. This photo was also reported taken while he was assigned to the 28th Infantry Division

Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, 8th Class. Awarded for exceptional merit, this is one of the more common Japanese medals.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Japanese Imperial Time Expired Soldier's League membership badge. This was an organization of ex-soldiers who were in the reserve and subject to call up in time of war.

Collar tabs as worn on Japanese tunics. The top pair indicate the rank of Superior Private; the bottom are for the rank of Corporal.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

"Shellback" certificate traditionally given to sailors the first time they cross the equator. This certificate was given to Leonard Reynolds in April, 1943 aboard the ship Bloemfontein. This was a Dutch ship that was taken over by the War Shipping Administration in June, 1941. In November 1941, it was part of convoy taking the 2nd battalion of the 131st Texas Artillery to the Philippines.

Certificate authorizing Private First Class Herman Buchanan of the 381st Infantry to retain a Japanese canteen and pair of rubber pants as war trophies. Every soldier was required to complete one of these certificates in order to legally retain captured enemy items, but the regulation was loosely enforced.
