Megan and Laura's
Projects

Megan and Laura are both excited to learn new needlework skills. Sometimes my project ideas for them never come about due to plain ol' lack of time! Now they are a bit older and can read and teach themselves.

Laura and Megan have both been doing silk ribbon embroidery. I picked up a few little kits by Bucilla at the BX. The kits had two pins or hair clip projects in each one. I found silk ribbon to be a great way of teaching the girls embroidery stitches. Most silk ribbon stitches are the same as floss embroidery and the silk ribbon works up so quickly that the girls finish their projects before they can become discouraged or bored. So far, Laura has finished one pin ( on top) and is nearly finished with two more. Megan has finished all three (bottom) pins. The girls solved my end of year teacher present dilemma when they decided to give their teachers a pin they had done.

Laura and Lissy. Lissy was named for the doll in the book Matilda. This was Laura's first machine sewing project as well as her first smocking project. The nighties are flannel from the BX. I made the girls' nighties from the pattern in Joy of Smocking by Martha Pullen. For the dolls, I adapted a doll bunting pattern from an Austrailian Smocking and Embroidery.

Megan and Matilda. Matilda after the book by Roald Dahl. This was Megan's second attempt at smocking and also her second time at the machine. Both girls used 7570 stitch #50 to finish the sleeves and hem. They cut the gowns themselves and did almost all of the sewing (except the bias binding at the neck). They learnt about finishing the edges and how to couch over elastic to gather the sleeve cuffs.
