Why Should Taxpayers be Charged for
Unnecessary Repairs?

We read with great interest Dr. Bickert's "In the Schools" column which appeared in the Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, edition of the Beavercreek News Current. He used this article to explain the transition to the middle school concept which will occur with the 1999-2000 school year. Transition to Middle School
He talked about "team teaching" and a "demanding curriculum for all students."
He tells how students will be taught according to their individual "learning styles" and "individual goals," and that after studying many models the Beavercreek school transition team subcommittee decided that this "team teaching" concept is the one that is best for all of our children. The few people on this committee made that decision for all of the parents here in Beavercreek. Remember that. Is this really what the teaching staff wants for our children? Is it what we want as parents? Where Are the Model Middle School Curricula?
We can move to the middle school concept without changing to the team teaching concept. One does not require the other. One teacher I spoke with said that 20 percent of her last year's class was mentally, emotionally, or physically challenged. How can one teacher individualize lessons to address each students' "learning style" when there is such a wide margin of abilities in one classroom? Yes, the most advanced can help the less able, but who will motivate the most. advanced? What about the extra workload that all this individualization will place upon our teaching staff? Will it require more teachers and/or assistants? Will the taxpayers, shortly after this concept is initiated, suddenly be asked once again to come up with yet another new school levy to pay for all of these changes? It was just last school year (1996-97) that most of the sixth grade had very few textbooks and some teachers who retired were not replaced as there was no money. A levy got passed to correct those shortages. Where is the money going to come from to pay for this new "cutting edge" curriculum? Can Dr. Bickert publicly state that taxpayers won't be asked to provide more funding? We would like to see that in print. We already have one of the better education systems in the state. Why "fix" what isn't broken and then charge the taxpayers for the unnecessary repairs?
