Logs and timbers as well as most other milled material has oil, dirt and just plain old "yuk"
on the surface so you must clean all that will be exposed to finish.
Rent, borrow, or buy a pressure washer that you can adjust the pressure. DO NOT !!!! set the
pressure above 750 psi to wash the material since high pressure will drive the dirt into the
wood. Also hold the nozzle away from the logs and timber and at an angle.
You can use prepared products that you can buy at the Home Centers to "Bleach" the wood
and remove any mildew etc. or you can use a mixture of one part household bleach to 4
parts water, pour into a low pressure garden sprayer and apply to the logs and timber. You
will need to use a good quality nylon brush and scrub a little or "much" depending on the
extent of dirt. Allow to set or rest for about twenty minutes then wash with the pressure
washer or garden hose with a good spray nozzle on the end. You must get all the bleach
solution off the logs since the bleach will dry the wood unnecessarily.
You need to apply your pesticide before the logs become completely dry. We highly
recommend Pene-Treat insecticide. It is waterbased and contains Borax. Will not harm
animals or humans but it sure does a number on the wood chewing insects.
