PREPARING FOR DELIVERY OF YOUR NEW LOG HOME

is no trivial matter.

You must have a good stable driveway that is easily accessible when a 45' semi rig arrives. There are definitely times when it is impossible to get this rig in your new driveway I will admit but you must remember that the drivers of these trucks do not unload for you and they will not get their rig into a situation they cannot get out of. Have either a crane or an All Terrain forklift available to off load the truck/trucks. The crane doesn't want to be a little unit that fits in a pick-up truck you are going to need one that will handle loads of 2 to 3 ton, same with the forklift. I suggest a 5,000 pound capacity.

Have a good idea where you are going to place the material and do some measuring. You don't need a very big home to have a very large pile of logs and timber etc. If you have bought a Kit Home you can sort the logs as to location after you off load the trucks. Your contractor may want to do this himself.

A foundation that is square, straight and the same dimensions you gave the log company is very important, oh don't laugh. Foundations seem to have a way of becoming totally different than what you told the company building the kit. Eight x eight x sixteen inch cement block is sufficient for a one story or 1 1/2 story home. If a poured concrete foundation makes you feel better and you can afford the extra by all means "do it". You can place your log home on a slab foundation if you wish or a crawl space and of course a basement foundation is okay also. If you are going to use block and have a basement I suggest you use 12" block in lieu of 8".

Have the lot around the foundation graded so the builder can work without falling into the hole around the foundation. A good contractor will probably refuse to work on the job if the foundation is not back filled, it is simply too dangerous.

Please have sufficient temporary electric available and that does not mean an extension cord running to a neighbor's home. Have an electrician make you a temporary unit that your power company will connect to. If you are in the boon docks and have no power to the property at this time you better have one heck of a good generator with plenty of fuel available.
